African Spurred Tortoise - Geochelone sulcata (Juvenile)
Also known as Sulcata Tortoises, they are one of the most common large tortoises in the pet trade. These tortoises can weigh up to 200lbs and are the third largest tortoise. Unfortunately, their low expense as cute hatchlings and high availability means they undergo a large amount of mistreatment usually involving malnutrition/Calcium & Vit.D deficiencies (inadequate UV lighting and food) that result in the famous “pyramiding” malformation of the shell. These tortoises are herbivorous (favorites include cactus and cactus fruit) and can be found in Northern Africa and throughout the Sahara Desert.
